The Centre for Bioethics and Emerging Technologies (CBET) at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham is launching a new academic journal, The New Bioethics – A Multidisciplinary Journal of Biotechnology and the Body during a celebratory event this Wednesday 25th September. Formerly Human Reproduction and Genetic Ethics, The New Bioethics (Maney publishing) will be edited by Dr Trevor Stammers, Programme Director in Bioethics and Medical Law, and co-edited by Matthew James, part of the CBET core team. The journal seeks to reclaim bioethics as a diverse and multidisciplinary project.
It covers issues such as assisted reproduction, genetics, regenerative medicine (including the use of stem cells), cognitive enhancement and technologies which have enabled human tissue to be taken, stored, manipulated and used for biomedical purposes. Dr Trevor Stammers commented, “The multidisciplinary nature of both the new Arts and Humanities School and the staffing in CBET, makes St Mary’s an ideal home for a new bioethics journal of this scope and nature.
The editorial team aim to see The New Bioethics make an increasingly significant contribution to bioethical scholarship and debate both in the UK and internationally.” Through research, teaching and international networking St Mary’s Centre for Bioethics and Emerging Technologies explores the ethical and social implications of biomedicine, nanotechnology and other new technologies. The New Bioethics is a bi-annual publication and is available on subscription from Maney Publishing.
