This week (Monday 4th to Friday 8th March) is Rubbish Week at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham. With a week of activities centred on waste and recycling, it aims to raise staff and students’ awareness of environmental sustainability.
Rubbish Week follows on from the recent Go Green Week and Fairtrade Fortnight events, and will provide a crucial insight into waste management at St Mary’s, facilitating a greater understanding of the University College’s current recycling initiatives.
Running at the same time as St Mary’s Students’ Union elections, Rubbish Week has the potential to reach many more people than before by reminding students and staff to be more aware of their waste during the elections.
On Thursday 7th March there will be an opportunity for students and staff to speak directly with the waste contractor at an educational stand in the refectory at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill Campus. Aiming to promote recycling and efficient waste management, there will also be an emphasis on the expected changes to the onsite facilities regarding the University College’s waste disposal.
In addition there will be an opportunity for students and staff to see exactly what happens to St Mary’s food waste with a proposed visit to a food recycling facility.
Residents in Waldegrave Park Halls have recently had recycling facilities made available to them and are encouraged to make full use of these.
Like every new initiative it promises to be an eventful few days with ‘rubbish’ being the topic of discussion.
