Next week St Mary’s University College, Twickenham will compete against its old rival Brunel University in the most anticipated event on the academic sporting calendar; the West London Varsity. Taking place on Wednesday 20th March at Brunel’s Uxbridge campus, teams from a range of sports will compete for the title of Varsity champion.
There will also be the chance to see St Mary’s AU President Luke Allen perform with the cheerleading squad as part of a charity challenge. Luke has embarked on a 20 sport challenge to raise money for Special Olympics Richmond, a charity established in conjunction with SMUC’s Olympic legacy. If Luke reaches the £1,000 target he will join the University College’s cheerleading squad for a one-off performance at West London Varsity this year.
Luke commented “The West London Varsity this year looks set to be exciting and an event not to be missed. Our teams have been very successful throughout the season, with some of them looking at promotion and league titles. The event brings students from both universities together to celebrate and showcase our sporting talents. It’s an occasion that us Simmies take great pride in being part of.
“The charity challenge has been great so far, I’ve got involved with 12 Sports Clubs and Societies now, including Boxing, Basketball, Rugby Union, and Netball, I’ve even done a bit of Stand-up comedy. The Cheerleading will be fun but it’s definitely going to be the biggest challenge of them all.”
This year promises to be as exciting and competitive as the previous year which was a draw, SMUC students can show their support by heading over to Brunel’s campus.
