Following the announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, remembers the Holy Father’s visit to its Strawberry Hill campus in 2010.
On 17th September 2010 the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, visited St Mary’s to lead three events during the second day of his four-day state visit, the first Papal visit to the UK since 1982.
St Mary’s Interim Principal Dr Arthur Naylor has commented, “It was an absolute privilege and a delight to host Pope Benedict XVI during his four-day visit to the UK.
“St Mary’s was selected to host three events on the day including The Big Assembly, where he met 3,500 school children and students to celebrate Catholic education, followed by a meeting with religious leaders.
“It was such an inspiring day and students and staff were extremely proud to be involved in such a momentous occasion.”
St Mary’s was identified by the Holy See for its first-rate facilities and location, and for the outstanding contribution the University College has made to Catholic education during its 160 year history.
