Students on the undergraduate Sports Rehabilitation programme at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham will now be given an independent quality mark after graduation.
On completion of the degree, students are entitled to join the British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) as an independent practitioner. Now, they will also be automatically added to a voluntary register vetted and approved by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.
The new register has been accredited under a new scheme set up by the Department of Health and is administered by an independent body. It means that anyone that belongs to the BASRaT register will be able to display the Accredited Voluntary Register quality mark, a sign that they belong to a register that meets the Professional Standards Authority’s robust standards.
Claire McLoughlin, the Programme Director for the undergraduate Sports Rehabilitation course at St Mary’s, commented, “St Mary’s is a leader in the field of sports rehabilitation, and the undergraduate degree was the first of its kind in the country. This new mark means that sports rehabilitation is now formally recognised as a health care occupation and students will be able to show patients and employers that they meet the high industry standards.
