Students from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham have been working with the Fiji and New Zealand Rugby teams ahead of the IRB Rugby Sevens at Twickenham this weekend.
A number of final year Sports Rehabilitation students have been providing sports massages to the players all week during training. On the day, St Mary’s lecturer Claire Mcloughlin will also be offering support to the players.
In addition, more than 40 students from across the undergraduate and short courses programmes will be offering free massages to people taking part in the MoonWalk London this weekend at Battersea Power Station.
Claire Mcloughlin said, “Our students regularly work with professional sports teams, elite athletes and members of the public during sporting events such as the Virgin London Marathon, which we have supported for a number of years.
“It offers them the opportunity to put into practice everything they have learnt in the classroom, whilst being of huge benefit to those charities and sporting events that we support.”
More than 60 students recently supported a number of charities at the Virgin London Marathon in April, offering free sports massages for runners crossing the finish line. Some of the feedback included:
“They did an amazing job and worked incredibly hard under the immense pressure that London Marathon brings.”
“It made such a huge difference, especially to those runners who were really struggling.”
“The team were brilliant and the runners all said how much they looked forward to the massage, loved the massage and found it really helped their legs.”
