Students from the Strength Club at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham have won their third consecutive British University and Colleges championship, which took place in Sheffield last weekend.
Students from St Mary’s Strength Club won four Gold, three Silver and three Bronze medals at the championships, which saw more than 110 athletes competing.
“This is an astonishing achievement, particularly as the number and quality of athletes entering the competition grows each year,” said Rob Anderson, President of St Mary’s Strength Club.
“To win three consecutive championships shows the relentless work ethic of the club overall, as well as the incredible effort of our coach, Kazem Panjavi. We would also like to thank our sponsor Sandy's Fishmongers for their ongoing support.”
St Mary’s Strength and Conditioning Science student Adam Mattiussi, who recently won a Silver medal at the National Weightlifting Championships in the under 77kg category, managed to lift 122kg for snatch and a record 150kg for the clean and jerk.
The talented Mattiussi is the current U23 British Weightlifting Champion, and was selected for the Great Britain Weightlifting Talent Squad. He is on course to qualify for the 2014 U23’s Championship, the World University Games and the Commonwealth Games.
