Students Awarded at SHAS Research Forum

Final year students from the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science (SHAS) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham were awarded for their research.

A number of final year students from the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science (SHAS) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham were presented with awards for their excellent research. Over 100 students showcased their work at the 2014 School of Sport, Health and Applied Science Research Forum, which took place in the Students’ Union. It was the ninth exhibition from the School and students were awarded for Outstanding Academic Achievement, Individual Achievement and the English Institute of Sport (EIS) prize for the Best Applied Research Project. Some of the winning research titles included Concussion Injuries in Gymnastics, The Impact of Social Class on the Experiences of Rugby Union Players and The Effects of Acute Pre-activation Exercises on Landing Kinematics on Female Athletes. Nutrition student Milene De Siqueira Borges studied The Representation of Food in Children’s Picture Books in the UK and was presented with a prize sponsored by an external company in recognition of an enthusiastic and innovative approach to research. The EIS prize for the Best Applied Research Project was awarded to Alexandria Sehgal, who examined Effects of the Menstrual Cycle on Repeated Sprint Performance in Trained Rugby Union Players. The awards were presented by Programme Directors and Vice-Chancellor Designate Francis Campbell handed students their certificates. Head of SHAS Prof John Nicholson said, “This is an exciting event, held every year, that is the students' opportunity to present their final year research work This year there have been some especially innovative projects, many carried out in association with leading researchers here at St Mary's.” Photos from the event can be found on the St Mary’s Facebook page.
