St Mary’s Athletes Achieve Success at Commonwealth Games

The recent Commonwealth Games, which ran from 23^rd July to 3^rd August in Glasgow, Scotland, was a success for athletes at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. A total of 21 athletes from St Mary’s Endurance, Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) competed for England, Scotland, Isle of Mann and Jersey at the Games, with England topping the overall medal table. Six time Paralympic Gold medallist David Weir, who trains at The St Mary’s Clinic, took Gold in the T54 1500m race whilst current EPACC athlete Jo Pavey secured Bronze in the Women’s 5,000m race. Current student Charlie Grice finished in 7^th place in the Men’s 1500m event, following his recent win in the same distance at the Sainsbury’s British Athletics Championships. EPACC athletes Emelia Gorecka, Beth Potter and Steph Twell all competed in the Women’s 5,000m race, with Emelia, who was 2013 European Junior Cross Country Champion, finishing in 8^th place, closely followed by Beth Potter in 9^th and Steph Twell in 14^th. Finally, Beth Potter, who is a current EPACC athlete and 2011 British Championship Bronze medallist took 5^th place in the 10,000m event. A number of athletes will also be competing in the European Athletics Championships which starts on Tuesday 12^th August.
