Your years at university are meant to be some of the best times of your life as you immerse yourself in new environments and meet new people. So why not take it a step further and try new things?
Student life shouldn’t have to be dictated by how many nights you spend in the club - so here are a few places to visit and things to do around Twickenham and London close to St Mary’s University campus, without the unhealthy effects of a hangover.
1. Twickenham Stadium
Twickenham is without a doubt the home of English rugby, so why not visit Twickenham Stadium? The stadium is the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world and when rugby fixtures are not taking place the venue is transformed into a concert arena. There is no other place where you can bump into the New Zealand rugby squad and Beyoncé.
2. Twickenham Studios
Not all Hollywood blockbusters are filmed in exotic locations or the bustling streets of New York. Brad Pitt briefly lived in Richmond with Angelina Jolie and their kids while he was filming World War Z here, and parts of Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom (starring Idris Elba aka Luther) were also filmed here.
3. Thorpe Park
Whether you’re an extreme thrill seeker or love water rides, Thorpe Park has rides everyone will love which you can enjoy as frequently as you want. Book online in advanced to enjoy greater discounts.
4. Hampton Court Palace
You may have visited the Palace during a primary school trip but can you tackle the maze as an adult? A walk through the gardens during the spring and summer would be a pleasurable experience and don’t forget to look out for the ghosts. Remember, tickets are discounted for students.
5. Southbank Centre
Even if you don’t view yourself as the ‘artsy’ type, the range of talks, workshops and festivals that take place at the Southbank Centre ensures that everyone’s preferences are catered for.
6. Roller Disco
Ice skating isn’t the only fun you can have on four wheels. Roller Disco in Vauxhall has plenty of themed nights and is guaranteed fun so pull out your leg warmers and get your skates on!
7. Watch your favourite TV shows for free
Ever wanted to watch The Cube, The Apprentice or 8 Out of 10 Cats live? Then visit Lost In TV, SRO Audiences or Applause Store to grab some free tickets to your favourite shows!
8. Go to a comedy show
They say laughter is the best medicine and it can also pass as a cheap night out. Bearcat Comedy Club is just a short journey away in St Margaret’s. Just don’t sit at the front; you may end up being the butt of the jokes!
9. Attend a theatre night
Twickenham is close to both Richmond Theatre and Rose Theatre Kingston and will show original plays and old favourites. Drama doesn’t always have to be on the television and you’re never too old for a pantomime.
10. Watch a Sport
Watching a sports event on the screen or in the pub is nothing like watching it up close with fellow fans. It doesn’t have to be Premier League Football or Rugby. Better yet, why not support fellow Simmies during student sport fixtures on Wednesdays.
