With Freshers’ Week just around the corner, new students may be wondering what they should take with them to university to make moving away from home as easy as possible. St Mary’s University, Twickenham offers a list of the top things to pack this September.
1. Documents. Sometimes boring, but definitely an essential! It’s vital to bring with you all the materials you need, otherwise things can get complicated very quickly. Things such as ID, evidence of financial support, bank account details, national insurance, NHS number and a diary or calendar are a good place to start.
2. A laundry basket and collapsible clothes horse plus sufficient coins for the launderette. We all know the stereotype of students letting washing pile up during their first year. Unfortunately, unless you’re organised, you’ll probably fall into this trap. Of course, if you’re planning on taking it home as an end of term present for your parents, a basket with strong handles is advised!
3. Stationery. Work is part of university life, so you’ll need the appropriate equipment to make your life easier. A USB stick or external hard drive will make saving your work a doddle, whilst a notepad and pen are essential for lectures. St Mary’s offers a range of IT and library support services, so be sure to check out what is on offer to you.
4. Home comforts. During times of stress or homesickness it’s nice to look at pictures family members or those you love. All the bedrooms in Halls of Residence have cork pin boards, which are great for displaying a collection if have lots to hang up! Similarly any items with sentimental value can have a comforting influence when we’re in most need.
5. A first aid kit. University has its frivolities, so it’s best to stock up on painkillers, vitamins and plasters. Be sure to register with the on-campus Health Centre.
6. Board games. When it gets near the end of term and the loan is running low, sometimes a night in can be a fun money saver. The classics like Monopoly and Pictionary are always a winner.
7. Earplugs. University work is a priority and there will be times when a good night’s sleep is in order, they might just make an early morning a whole lot easier!
8. Word fridge magnets. Leaving notes for your favourite flatmates are a great way to brighten someone’s day, or tell them an important message.
9. Food. It’s easy to get rundown in the height of term time, therefore it’s essential to have food at your disposal that will give you that energy or fibre boost when you need it most. Try things like nuts and seeds, dried fruit and cereal bars. Of course, you can always take full advantage of the Refectory or Dol.cHe Vita Cafe.
10. Bedding. Bed time is famously one of a student’s favourite past times, so it makes sense for it to be comfortable. Invest some nice bed linen to make your room feel more like home.
