Guest Lecturer to Discuss ‘Female Husbands’ in the 18th Century

A guest lecture exploring the prosecution of women who lived as men will be held at St Mary’s University, Twickenham on Wednesday 26th February.

The School of Management and Social Sciences at St Mary’s University, Twickenham will be hosting a guest lecture on Wednesday 26th February, which will explore the reasons behind the prosecution of women who lived as men and married other women. Called From Courtship to Courtroom: the Prosecution of ‘Female Husbands’ in the 18th Century, the research seminar will be delivered by Dr Caroline Derry from London Metropolitan University. The talk, which is free to attend, will also go on to discuss how the local community were involved in the court trials and consequential punishment of these women. Dr Derry is a Senior Lecturer in Law at London Metropolitan University, having practised as a barrister in criminal defence and as a solicitor. She has also contributed to the King’s Law Journal, in a volume entitled Sexuality and Locality in the Trial of Mary Hamilton, ‘Female Husband’. The public lecture will take place from 2-3pm in Room D2 at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill Campus and is free to attend without prior registration.
