Two academics from St Mary’s University, Twickenham recently visited Dublin to discuss coaching pedagogy with the Academy and Coach Development staff of Leinster Rugby Club.
Programme Director for St Mary’s Physical and Sport Education undergraduate course Michael Ayres, along with Programme Lecturer Sam Page, spoke about issues such as developing young elite players through games and also the significant impact beliefs, values and culture has on coaches on pedagogical approach to working with young elite players. There were 40 coaches present, who coach over 4,000 young people in the Leinster region between them.
Michael and Sam also presented to 20 head teachers and PE teachers who work closely with Leinster RC, who are currently the reigning European Champions, as the schools play a significant role in the development of rugby in Ireland.
Michael said, “The mission statement of Leinster RC is to be the global standard bearer for professional club rugby and to encourage, organise, promote and grow the participation in and playing of rugby in the 12 counties of Leinster. Their coaches, from the academy and community, are their most important resource ensuring their mission statement is fulfilled.
“Myself and Sam were highly honoured to work with such a prestigious club. It also shows how highly regarded the University has become within the field of sport and coaching pedagogy.”
