St Mary’s Celebrates National Science and Engineering Week

The School of Sport, Health and Applied Science (SHAS) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham will be hosting a three-day event in March for high school and sixth form students to mark National Science and Engineering Week (14th – 23rd March). The event, called the Wonders of Physics, will consist of lectures, workshops and discussions for school children in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. A Wonders of Physics lecture will examine how we use physics in our daily lives while the Physics DIY workshops will allow students to create experiments such as building an electromagnet. Students will then discuss the theory behind their experiments in the What’s Going On discussion sessions. There will also be a free public lecture exploring the impact of physics on our daily lives on Tuesday 18th March, led by Prof John Nicholson. St Mary’s Lecturer in Applied Physics Dr Elisabetta Canetta said, “This is a great opportunity for Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 students to feed their curiosity about Physics and the physical phenomena that they experience daily and for the teachers to nurture the keen scientists of the future.” National Science and Engineering Week is a 10 day programme that aims to celebrate and raise the awareness of science, engineering and technology with a range of events and activities across the UK. It forms part of a number of events organised by the British Science Association. The Wonder of Physics event also forms part of the University’s widening participation initiatives, which aims to raise student’s aspirations for higher education with a range of activities throughout the year. The Key Stage 3 and 4 event will take place on Monday 17th March while the Key Stage 5 event will follow on Wednesday 19th March.
