Dr Stuart Oliver, Geography Programme Director at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, recently attained his PhD exploring the cultural geography of nature.
Awarded in July, his thesis titled “Nature as a Process in Landscape: the Making of Real, Imaginary, and Symbolic Socion atural Spaces" examined the building of the locks on the Thames and the river embankments in London.
Stuart already holds degrees from the University of Oxford (MA Status) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (MPhil) and is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He commented, "I'm delighted to be awarded this degree, and I'd like to thank my students, colleagues, and fellow geographers for their encouragement and support".
Stuart joined St Mary's in 1992 having worked previously as a journalist, visiting lecturer and Open University tutor. He specialises in the area of cultural geography and the cultural geography of nature and teaches modules on Environment and Society and Culture and Landscape on the geography programme at St Mary’s and also contributes to the Tourism programme.
