Sport Science undergraduate students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been selected to compete for Team Great Britain in the Canoe Sprint event at the 2014 World University Championships.
Matthew Bowley and Daniel Johnson have been selected to compete in a number of Canoe Sprint events at the competition, which will take place from 15th to 17th August in Minsk, Belarus including the K1 500m (single), K2 1000m (double) and K4 200m (quad) races.
The pair, who train at the Royal Canoe Club in Teddington with U23 Great Britain National Coach Trevor Hunter, will join 10 other university students from across the country to represent Great Britain.
This is not the first international competition for Matt and Dan, who have recently returned from the U23 World Canoe Sprint Championships in Hungary, where they took 9th place in the K2 1000 event.
Matt said, “Dan and I have just returned from a Senior Olympic Training Camp, which has really increased our confidence, but this is our first University Championships and we’re not sure what to expect.
“Nevertheless with our current form we will be, at a minimum, hoping for a top nine finish and will be pushing to win medals, which is a realistic target. We want to bring back as many Gold medals home to St Mary’s as we can and add to both ours, and the University’s successful sporting year.”
