Primary Education students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham recently welcomed MP Dr Vince Cable to campus to view teaching resources created as part of their cross-curricular exhibition.
The annual event, organised by Senior Lecturer in Education, Dot D’Urban-Jackson, together with St Mary’s Primary Education tutors, is designed for Second Year students to present their ideas on teaching ethical enterprise to young children. Dr Cable, who is Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, examined the work that was on display and engaged in lively conversation with the students and was also joined by representatives from UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and head teachers from the University’s partnership schools.
Dr Cable said, "How business works is an increasingly vital part of our school curriculum. It was particularly encouraging to see at first hand how students at St Mary's University, a widely acknowledged centre of teaching excellence, were leading the way in this important field."
Helen Lockey, Head Teacher of Hampton Junior School said, “I’ve seen a huge amount of initiative and creativity which will develop the children’s understanding of enterprise. I’m glad to see that so much of it involves activity that will hook the children’s interest, such as food and organising charity events."
Caroline Corker, St Mary’s Primary Education Academic Director, added, “Students and staff were delighted by the visit from our local MP. The exhibition was part of the students’ assessment and they’ve not only increased their knowledge and understanding of enterprise education but also had opportunities to demonstrate key skills that identify them as outstanding practitioners including, presentation and public speaking skills and working collaboratively.
“I’m convinced that when our students become emerging teachers, they will be able to offer a lot more knowledge and understanding of enterprise as a result of being part of this course.”
