St Mary’s University, Twickenham recently welcomed students from Jo Richardson Community School as part of an Aspirations Visit Day.
As a joint venture between the school and St Mary’s Undergraduate Physical and Sport Education (PSE) programme, 12 AS and A2 students visited the Strawberry Hill campus to experience a day in the life of a PSE student.
The A-Level students were split into small groups to participate in study sessions with first year PSE undergraduates. They then went on to examine the idea of twenty-first century learners and teaching styles in both practical and theory PE sessions and finished off the day by delivering short teaching episodes to each other and capturing the footage on go-pro cameras.
St Mary’s graduate Jamie Cole, who is now a PE teacher at Jo Richardson Community School, commented, “It was a great day and gave a really positive account of both the PSE course and the University. It gives the students a realistic insight in to what studying at university is about.”
The Aspirations Visit Day is now in its second year, with a student from the previous year deciding to study PSE at St Mary’s as a result of the visit. For more information about Widening Participation at St Mary’s, please visit the website.
