The student Rugby League Team at St Mary’s University, Twickenham has raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK after organising a 24-hour rowing session.
Taking a break from their usual rugby training, the team used indoor rowing machines in the University’s Students’ Union Lounge to row a total of 1,230,520 metres in 24-hours!
During the challenge, the players were joined by members of several other St Mary’s sports clubs who helped to cover the distance and donated generously. The Students’ Union staff even helped to row at one point.
St Mary’s Rugby League Vice-Captain Dan Smith said, “It was the hardest 24-hours I've ever had to do! I’m really proud of the team and everyone who helped us during the challenge and I'm delighted we've helped such a good cause."
With the help of donations from friends, family and University staff, the team raised almost £500 during the challenge, with a further £500 raised during their ‘Friday Club’ held in the SU Bar, where they donated £1.50 of the door entry to the cause.
Donations are still being accepted, if you would like to support the challenge, please visit the Virgin Money Giving page.
