St Mary’s University, Twickenham has extended its research output by becoming a founding member of the newly launched International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA).
The IPLA is a charitable organisation that aims to promote the value and develop the concept of physical literacy world-wide, and to support and disseminate research and scholarly activity in all aspects of physical literacy.
Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.
St Mary’s Physical and Sport Education lecturer Helen Hazelwood is the research and scholarly activity manager at the IPLA, as well as a trustee and founding member. She has collated a global database of research into physical literacy and encourages and supports new research in this field.
A launch event was held at Wyboston Lakes, Bedforshire from Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th June with 45 invited delegates from Canada, Japan, Australia and several European countries attending.
Head of St Mary’s School of Education, Theology and Leadership Dr Maureen Glackin said, “I am thrilled that St Mary's is a founding member of the association. Its foundation provides an international framework within which to showcase the excellent research expertise of colleagues in the school who are leaders in this discipline area.”
