Success for St Mary's Athletes at BUCS Outdoor Championships

Athletes from St Mary’s University, Twickenham saw success at the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships collecting eight medals.

Athletes from St Mary’s University, Twickenham saw success at this weekend’s BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships in Bedford. Overall, seven athletes brought home eight medals; three Gold, two Silver and three Bronze, with the St Mary’s women’s team finishing third on the medal table. Adeline Gouenon won the women’s 100m and 200m races with times of 11.61 and 24.10 respectively. St Mary’s also collected two medals in the women’s 1500m event, with Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) Athlete Amy Griffiths winning the Gold medal in a time of 4:20.50 and current National Cross Country Champion Lily Partridge taking the Bronze medal with a time of 4:23.11. Tom Hook also won Silver in the men’s 1500m with a time of 3:50.09. Meanwhile, In the 5000m races, Michael Callegari took the Bronze for the men and Louise Small won the Silver in the women’s. Away from the track events, the University also saw success in the Discus with student Pippa Wingate taking a Bronze medal with a distance of 42.89m. EPACC also success at the Payton Jordan Invitational competition at Stanford University, California as Andy Vernon won the 10k in a time of 27:42.02. Steph Twell also finished eighth in the 5k in 15:13.82. Both athletes were also able to secure qualification for the World Championships with their times. St Mary’s Athletics Union President Josh Moss said, It was another fantastic sporting weekend for St Mary’s. To see us gain medals in a wide range of events shows how far the athletics club has come. We have a great history in the middle/long distance events but we are now getting medals in the sprints and throws too. For the ladies team to beat the likes of Birmingham and Cardiff just shows that we are becoming a complete team and the potential for us there is huge.”
