The Australian Rugby Union Team have selected St Mary’s University, Twickenham and The Lensbury Club as their team base for the knockout stages of Rugby World Cup 2015 (RWC).
As an RWC 2015 Team Base, Australia will follow New Zealand and South Africa in utilising the world class sporting facilities at St Mary’s. The University has previously been used as a Pre-Games Training Camp for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Director of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, “We are delighted to have hosted New Zealand and South Africa during the Tournament and are looking forward to working with Australia as the competition progresses.”
As a Rugby World Cup 2015 Team Base, the Lensbury and St Mary’s are providing a range of world-class facilities including indoor and outdoor pitches, a swimming pool, gym and accommodation - all of which will be utilised by the teams prior to and during the Tournament.
During the London 2012 Olympic Games, the University hosted more than 150 athletes and officials from ten countries. St Mary’s provided use of its world-class facilities, services, and accommodation to the teams as they went on to win nine medals: one Gold, four Silver and four Bronze.
