Eight Drama and Theatre Arts students from St Mary’s University, Twickenham are performing in the sold out immersive theatre experience Muse of Fire at Shakespeare's Globe, London this week.
The students were recruited by Globe Education to take on key roles in the production, which is aimed at children, as tour guides, puppet masters, and a pair of terrified builders. The performance splits the audience into teams who are lead around hidden parts of the theatre by tour guides. The audience members look for clues to solve the mystery of what is happening at The Globe before a grand finale in the theatre.
Katie Bennett, Drama and Theatre Arts student, said, “It was all a bit of a whirlwind, everything happened so quickly. We went for our audition with the Director and Producer of the show on Thursday evening and we were in for rehearsals on the Saturday! However, everyone was so welcoming and made us feel really at ease. We were even invited to take our first steps onto the Globe stage and also onto Juliet's balcony! It was a truly breathtaking experience.”
Christopher J Railton, Drama and Theatre Arts student, said, “I am playing one of the tour guides, which involves me taking a group around the production and chatting to them. The thing I love about this role is that I am constantly using my improvisation skills to truly immerse the families in the experience. I find it great as no two audiences are the same and it is a real challenge to keep the audience engaged and entertained with very little script, but it is a challenge that I love!”
Muse of Fire is being performed at 11am and 2pm from Monday 16th to Friday 20th February. To read a review of the performance by Mark Griffin, St Mary’s Academic Director for Drama, please visit the Drama St Mary’s blog.
