Primary Partnerships Co-ordinator at St Mary’s University, Twickenham Jenny Day is set to embark on a sailing adventure in September with the Clipper Round the World Yatch Race.
Starting in the UK and travelling through South America, South Africa, Australia, Asia and North America before returning to the UK. A total of twelve 70ft racing yachts make up the fleet that race around the world in eight stages, known as legs. Jenny will join the crew of the Garmin boat for legs one and seven.
The first leg will see Jenny sail 5968 miles from London to Rio de Janeiro in September 2015. When Jenny re-joins the crew for the seventh leg in 2016, she will sail over 7000 miles from Seattle to New York, which will include passing through the Panama Canal.
Jenny said of taking part in the race, “I used to sail dinghies when I was younger and as a previous rower, I have always loved being out on the water. Taking part in the Clipper race is my biggest challenge yet. I am confident with my team, as we have been trained to become a self-sufficient unit, capable of handling any situation, no matter how severe the conditions.”
Set up in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox Johnson, the first person to circumnavigate the world, the Clipper Round the World Race aims to give people the chance to sail around the globe, even if they have no sailing experience. Each boat is made up of a team of 50 people, including doctors and nurses, but there will only be 20-24 team members on board at a time.
Everyone has to take part in everyday tasks such as cooking or sail repairs but each individual will have their own specialism. Applicants who are selected to take part have to undergo an intense four level training programme where they learn and develop skills such as teamwork and maintaining the yacht.
From Saturday 22nd August, St Katharine’s Dock will be taken over by the Clipper 2015-16 Race. There will be daily live entertainment and free open boat tours, as well as numerous food stalls and merchandise stands. The first leg of the race starts on Sunday 30th August and will begin with the fleet processing along the Thames.
