St Mary’s University, Twickenham Alumnus Moe Sbihi won a Gold medal as part of Team GB’s Men’s Eight crew at the World Rowing Cup, held in Varese, Italy from the 19th to 21st June.
The crew competed against a host of top teams from around the world in their race, defeating second placed Germany by 0.35 seconds with a time of 5:26.93. The USA claimed the Bronze medal with a time of 5:29.38. Elsewhere at the championships, Team GB saw lots of success, claiming a total of ten medals, including five Golds, to finish top of the medal table.
Director of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, “Moe was competing as part of a new-look eight and this was an exceptional GB performance to beat the German crew who are Olympic and European champions.”
Moe, who studied a BSc Sport Science with Health, Nutrition and Exercise as part of a sports scholarship at St Mary’s, has seen his career go from strength to strength in recent years, having been part of the crew that won the Bronze medal in the Men’s Eight at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Moe also had a very successful 2014 season, winning Gold in the Men’s Four at both the World and European Rowing Championship.
