In the build up to the Richmond Running Festival in September, the St Mary’s Clinic are hosting a series of training runs for participants alongside race organiser Tom Bedford and the Wimbledon Clinics.
The second training run took place on Saturday 11th July, and began with St Mary’s Clinic Sport Psychologist Jack Marlow giving advice about a number of topics including coping with fatigue during training and racing, how to use coping strategies such as self-talk and much more.
St Mary’s Clinic Physiotherapist Rory Brown and Wimbledon Clinic Physiotherapist Claire Robertson were also on hand to impart their years of experience and answer any questions that the runners had about injuries they had experienced.
The runners were then split into three groups based upon various levels with St Mary’s alumna and Olympic runner Jemma Simpson, steeple chaser Mark Draper, and 800m runner Megan Edwards each leading a group on a run around Bushy Park.
Speaking about the training run Jack Marlow said, “My aim was to guide runners through the process of how these questions can be answered and reach their goals. From our brief discussions, all the runners stated that they came away with a clearer understanding of psychology and a greater appreciation of the use of psychology in their running.
“I found it a great pleasure to be part of the festival as it was a great opportunity to meet local runners who all shared the enthusiasm for learning and exploring new opportunities to improve their running and I would encourage other budding runners to participate in the next Richmond Running Festival.”
The third, and final, training run will take place on 25th July at 10am, starting at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill Campus. The event is free and open to runners that have entered either the 10k or half marathon at The Richmond Running Festival, please click here to book your place.
