Students from St Mary’s University, Twickenham competed in the annual West London Varsity against Brunel University on 17th March at the Brunel campus, Uxbridge.
St Mary’s arrived as defending champions having won the 2014 competition at home. The West London Varsity, a highlight in the Universities’ calendars, saw teams from both universities compete in a range of sports, including Cricket, Futsal, Basketball, Volleyball, Rugby League and Union, Weightlifting, and the debut season of Ultimate Frisbee, amongst many others. The day also saw hundreds of spectators travel from the University’s Strawberry Hill campus to cheer on St Mary’s and create a phenomenal atmosphere for the teams to compete in.
St Mary’s saw great success during the day with convincing victories in the Men’s Rugby League, Women’s Football, Men’s cricket and Women’s Rugby Union, and a dramatic comeback to win the Men’s Hockey. Despite fantastic performance from all of the St Mary’s teams, and a number of very close matches, Brunel ended the day as victors with the final score at 13.5 to 11.5.
Athletics Union President Josh Moss said, "What a day this year’s West London Varsity was! It was the closest West London Varsity ever and it remained neck and neck throughout the day, and to only be one win away from retaining the trophy is credit to our students and their phenomenal effort."
"The whole day summed up St Mary’s for me as Simmies showed passion, commitment, and togetherness, and this is something we will always have over Brunel. Thank you to every competitor and supporter who came along and made up the blue and white army."
