Alumnus of the MA Sports Journalism programme at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, Michael Steward has won the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Student Journalist of the Year Award.
Michael won his prize at the end of November at the annual Journalism Skills Conference, which celebrates the achievements of the top performing students and trainee reporters across the UK.
Michael achieved the Gold Standard in his NCTJ Diploma Exams and is due to receive his MA in Sports Journalism in December. The judges praised Michael’s stories, noting, "His interviews were well researched, full of human interest, and of exceptional quality".
Speaking after the award ceremony Michael said, "I'm really delighted to receive the Student Sports Journalism Award", said Michael, "It's an honour and I want to thank all my course tutors for supporting me last year".
Programme Director for MA Sports Journalism Daragh Minogue said, "The NCTJ Awards for Excellence are really competitive, so to win this prize is a great achievement. Michael's success reflects the quality of students we have on the degree. Everyone in his cohort has already secured a job in the industry and I'm looking forward to celebrating with them all at their graduation ceremony in March".
