Third year Drama and Theatre Arts students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham were recently treated to an acting master class with acclaimed actor Paterson Joseph.
The session began with some warm up exercises and ice breaking games to relax the students. Following this, Paterson spoke to them about improvisation, giving them expert tips to help them improve their performances.
During the workshop they participated in various improvisation exercises under Paterson’s guidance. One saw them create freeze-frame poses in groups of two and three. Another exercise saw them take part in a word association game in which they improvised a story by saying one word each.
Julie Spencer, Programme Director for BA Drama and Applied Theatre, said, “Its great to have an actor as experienced and prolific as Paterson coming in to work with students. This is just one of a series of Masterclasses that Drama St Mary’s have planned to help prepare our third year students as they start the exciting journey that will lead to careers in which they will flourish.”
Paterson has had an illustrious career, appearing in Shakespeare at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and on TV in Peep Show, Casualty, Green Wing, Law and Order UK. He also appeared in The Beach alongside Leonardo De Caprio and alongside Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux. He also recently appeared in an adaption of Good Omens and in the new HBO series The Leftovers.
