The MA Education programme in the School of Education, Theology and Leadership at St Mary’s University, Twickenham is to host a keynote lecture by guest speaker Prof John Sharp on Wednesday 10th June.
The lecture, entitled Academic boredom among students in higher education: a mixed-methods exploration of characteristics, contributors and consequences, will argue that academic boredom contributes adversely towards student engagement, learning and overall performance across a diverse range of settings including universities. It will discuss findings from Prof Sharp’s research in the field, which studied 235 final year undergraduates using a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore academic boredom.
Prof Sharp is Professor of Education at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln. As a former geologist with BP and primary school teacher in Cardiff, he has also worked at the University of Plymouth and the University of Southampton. Having started out in HE as a lecturer in science education, John's interests have focused more recently on lecturer self-efficacy, research capacity building and student boredom. He specialises in mixed-methods research and quants in particular.
The lecture is free and open to the public and will begin at 6pm in the Waldegrave Drawing Room on the University’s Strawberry Hill campus. To book your place please contact Celine James at celine.james@stmarys.ac.uk or 020 8240 4197.
