A student from the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science (SHAS) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham was recently awarded for his research into nutrition and sport.
Arthur Dunne, who studied on St Mary’s undergraduate BSc Nutrition programme and is about to graduate from the MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition, won the Student Sports Nutrition Award from the Dairy Council and the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr).
The competition asked students to explore how milk and milk products are used within exercise or elite sport in a 1,000-2,000 word case study. Following research which formed part of his undergraduate study, Arthur submitted a paper entitled Does consuming unflavoured milk effectively attenuate muscle damage after strenuous exercise?. He was supported by the Programme Director for the postgraduate Applied Sports Nutrition programme, Gill Horgan, who suggested he enter the competition.
Arthur was awarded a cash prize and will have his case study published in a sport-industry related journal. He said, “I was delighted to win the award from a prestigious organisation as the Dairy Council particularly as I have a close connection with the dairy industry. The achievement would not have been possible without the excellent tutelage of the nutrition department and St Mary’s research facilities.”
The Dairy Council is an organisation which provides science based information on the role of dairy foods as part of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle and runs the competition annually, with a Student Award and a Professional Award.
