Head of the School of Sport, Health, and Applied Science at St Mary’s University, Twickenham Prof John Brewer is to discuss the evolution of applied sport science during his inaugural lecture on Tuesday 30th June.
The lecture entitled The Evolution of Applied Sport Science: from mountains to medals and beyond will focus on the evolving role that science has played in sport and exercise. It will chart the application of scientific knowledge to sports performance from the time of the Ancient Greeks, through to the use of science and technology to support today’s Olympic athletes and World Champions. It will explore how, as our knowledge of the scientific principles of training and nutrition have evolved, this has been applied to coaching and training across a range of individual and team sports to enhance performance and recovery.

The lecture will also demonstrate how the marginal gains from the application of science to elite athletes can also be used to enhance the performance of recreational sports men and women, and to encourage and promote exercise and health in the general population. The lecture will also explore some of the challenges facing 21st century sport, and how science can be used to help overcome some of these. This will include the on-going battle against doping in sport, and the potential use of epigenetics to individualise training and nutrition.
Prof Brewer began his career as Head of Human Performance for the Football Association, where he formed part of the support team for the 1990 Italian World Cup, before running his own sports science and sports injury business at Lilleshall National Sports Centre for 15 years. John then went on to work at GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) as a member of the leadership team in the Nutritional Healthcare Business where he was responsible for research and sport science education for Lucozade Sport.
Prof Brewer has since undertaken senior leadership roles within the University of Bedfordshire. He has also held a number of significant Board level roles including Chair of the London Regional Sports Board, a Government appointed Non-Executive Director of UK Anti-Doping, Non-Executive Director of British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), and Chair of British Ski and Snowboard.
