Theatre Director Michael Attenborough visited Drama St Mary’s recently to deliver the opening lecture of this year’s Shakespeare module. Michael is no stranger to Shakespeare in Production having been Resident Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company for twelve years and having recently directed MacBeth in Brisbane and As You Like it in Washington D.C. Son of actor-director Richard Attenborough, Michael’s theatre career includes 11 years as artistic director of the Almeida Theatre and five years at the Hampstead Theatre. He is an Honorary Professor of English & Drama at Sussex University and was awarded the CBE for services to theatre in 2013. He is presently directing a new play, Reasons to be Happy by Neil Labute, at the Hampstead Theatre. Prof Trevor Walker said, “The students really appreciated the opportunity to discuss Shakespeare in Production with one of the UK’s top theatre directors. His visit underlines Drama St Mary’s commitment to bringing in top industry practitioner / teachers as visiting lecturers on our acting programmes.”
