Former Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills The Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable has been appointed a Visiting Professor at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London. Sir Vince will join the School of Management and Social Sciences (MSS) where he will contribute to teaching across the business, finance and economics modules and advise on a new curriculum.
He will also work with Pro-Vice Chancellor Ruth Kelly on St Mary’s enterprise development and local community engagement. Sir Vince was Member of Parliament for Twickenham and St Mary’s constituency MP between 1997 and 2015. He served as Business Secretary throughout the Coalition Government from 2010-2015 and was knighted last year for his services to Government.
Prior to entering Parliament, he had a distinguished career as an economist. Sir Vince’s appointment is the latest addition to the academic team at St Mary’s. Last month former government minister Mark Hoban and University of Kent Senior Lecturer Dr Adrian Pabst were both appointed to support the development of the School’s business management programmes. They will also assist with the development of the public engagement of the School and work in collaboration across other disciplines.
Sir Vince Cable said, “I have always enjoyed very good relations with St Mary’s University and it is a privilege to join its staff as a Visiting Professor. We live in a period of significant economic change where the future of capitalism and the ethics of business have been called into question. St Mary’s has an important role to play in contributing to that debate.”
Vice-Chancellor of St Mary’s Francis Campbell said, “I’m delighted that Sir Vince has accepted our invitation to join St Mary’s teaching staff, he will be a great asset to our University. Our students will benefit greatly from his first-hand experience of the inner workings of government and his vast knowledge of the economy. I also look forward to working with him as St Mary’s builds closer relationships with the local business community.”
The Rt Hon Sir Vincent Cable was the Liberal Democrats’ Chief Economic Spokesperson from 2003-2010, having previously served as Chief Economist for Shell from 1995-1997. He has published a number of books on global economics, including The Storm: The World Economic Crisis and What it Means [2009] and After the Storm [2015]. He was knighted in December 2015 for services to Government. He is currently Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics and is also a Visiting Professor at Nottingham University and a Governor of Richmond Adult Community College in London.
