Sporting alumni of St Mary’s University, Twickenham saw a very successful weekend winning two Paralympic Medals and the Great North Run.
Alumna Corrine Hall won a Gold Medal as tandem cycle pilot for Lora Turnham at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games on Sunday. The duo won their medal in the 3000m Individual Pursuit B, in a time of 3:28.05, three seconds ahead of second place New Zealand. Corrine will next race in the Time Trial B on the 14th September and the Road Race B on 17th September.
On Saturday, European Champion T33 Wheelchair Racer and recent Sport Science graduate Toby Gold won the Silver Medal in the Men’s 100m Sprint. Toby completed the race in a time of 17.84, a second behind Ahmad Almutairi who set a new Paralympic Record of 16.61.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Alumnus Mo Farah, four time Olympic Gold Medallist, won the third consecutive Great North Run, becoming the first person to do so. At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Mo became the first British athlete to retain a long distance Olympic title, but also the first to achieve both the 5000m and 10000m in consecutive games.
Director of Sport Andrew Reid-Smith said, "Lorna and Corrine are a fairly new pairing and will be absolutely delighted to have started their Paralympic campaign with a Gold. Toby's Silver comes in his debut Games and a race where a new Paralympic record was set, and Mo has added to his two Golds from Rio by becoming the first runner to win the Great North Run three times in a row. We have seen some incredible sporting feats this summer and St Mary's alumni continue to make a significant contribution."
