Feature: Why you should attend Warwick Summer School in London

St Mary’s University, Twickenham is delighted to confirm that it is collaborating with the University of Warwick to bring the prestigious Warwick Summer School (WSS) to our Strawberry Hill campus.

St Mary’s University, Twickenham is delighted to confirm that it is collaborating with the University of Warwick to bring the prestigious Warwick Summer School (WSS) to our Strawberry Hill campus in south-west London from 16th July to 4th August 2017.

The summer school will see attendees benefit from the academic excellence of Warwick, a world-leading public research university, and St Mary’s, whose teaching and academic expertise date back to 1850, as well as the wealth of culture, history and commerce which defines this global city.

So, how exactly will the Summer School enhance your programme of study?

It will enable you to:

Choose from a variety of courses

A range of courses will be on offer at the summer school, to give you the opportunity to select those that meet your specific needs, whether your goal is to boost your core knowledge, develop in a specialist area or refine your critical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills.

Keen to cater to all students, WSS ensures there are courses available for beginners as well as more experienced individuals. A former student described the Money and Banking module as “an amazing opportunity to learn more and expand what I know”.

Learn from the experts

The summer school will feature a programme of talks and debates with influential guest speakers including George Akerlof, the winner of the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize for Economic Science, and Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable, former Secretary of State for Business and a Visiting Lecturer at St Mary’s. Past students have thoroughly enjoyed these sessions, which cover a wide range of topics.

Merge academic and practical learning

The summer school integrates academic studies with opportunities to visit businesses and institutions in and around London. The capital is home to some of the world’s biggest businesses and is known for being a financial centre with a fast-growing technology sector.

Experience learning and living on campus

The summer school will be held at St Mary’s stunning self-contained campus, which boasts Olympic-level sports facilities, a modern, well-resourced library, a Starbucks coffee shop and café, a lot of lush green space, and much more.

St Mary’s own students who live on campus thrive in their academic and personal development, as the University is a hub for learning, networking, and socialising. One of our own students said, “It’s great to be where everything happens.”

The summer school will provide an excellent opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a student at a London university, helping you get valuable international academic experience and take in all St Mary’s has to offer.

Build your international network

You will make friends and establish a network of global contacts. Both St Mary’s and Warwick are popular and respected within the international community, with St Mary’s being ranked number one in London by international students in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2016 and Warwick’s Economics Summer School welcoming 180 students from more than 39 different countries in last year.

Utilise St Mary’s sports facilities

As London’s number one university for sport, St Mary’s has a reputation for excellence. Twenty-three of our athletes competed at the Rio 2016 Games, winning nine medals, which would rank the University as the 25th country in the world in the Olympics. Whether you simply want to remain active and healthy or are an athlete, you’ll be delighted with what St Mary’s can offer you.

Take time out on a historic campus

St Mary’s benefits from having the historic Strawberry Hill in its grounds. Horace Walpole, a son of the politician Robert Walpole, bought the house in 1717 and enlarged it in a style that took its place in the history of architecture as Strawberry Hill Gothic. The 19th century Waldegrave Wing is used by the University and those at the summer school will benefit from the lovely grounds that form part of our campus.

Explore London, Oxford and Brighton

London is cosmopolitan and exciting and has some of the world's most iconic buildings, sights and attractions. St Mary’s campus is just 30 minutes from the heart of the city, making it easy for you to enjoy theatres, galleries, museums and the latest exhibitions – many of which have free access.

As part of the three-week extensive summer school programme, there are excursions to Oxford, which is known worldwide as the home of the University of Oxford and has exquisite examples of English architecture, and seaside resort Brighton, which has been dubbed Britain’s ‘hippest city’.

Enjoy local treasures

St Mary’s is located in the Royal Borough of Richmond Upon Thames, which is perfect for visiting nearby Hampton Court Palace, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and the royal deer parks of Richmond and Bushy.
