Six St Mary’s Athletes Selected for Team England at the Commonwealth Games

The English Team competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games have selected six athletes and alumni of St Mary’s University, Twickenham.

Hosted in Gold Coast, Australia, in April 2018, the Games bring together the leading athletics talent from across the Commonwealth to compete for their countries.

Five Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) athletes will be competing at the games. Rio 2016 Olympian Elliot Giles with be competing in the Men’s 800m alongside London 2012 800m finalist Andrew Osagie. They will be joined in the Women’s 800m by Adelle Tracey who reached the London 2017 World Championships semi-final.

Elsewhere, Rio 2016 Olympians Charlie Grice and Andy Vernon will be competing. Charlie will run in the Men’s 1500m, having reached the finals at Rio, whilst Andy will run in the Men’s 10000m.

St Mary’s Alumna and Olympian Jade Lally will also be competing in the Women’s Discus. Jade, who still regularly trains at St Mary’s, competed at Rio 2016 and more recently in the London 2017 World Championships.

Speaking of their selections, Director of Sport Andrew Reid-Smith said, “St Mary’s has gone from strength to strength in recent years with selections at major competitions. We saw 25 athletes compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and 11 at London 2017 World Championships. I am sure we will see more of our athletes selected for the Commonwealth Games when further squads are announced.”
