Three athletes from the Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham confirmed their selection at the British Championships in Birmingham on the 1st and 2nd July.
The Championships, which were attended by a record 35 EPACC athletes, operated as the British Trials ahead of the London 2017 World Championships. Three EPACC athletes became British Champions, with a further two Silvers and one Bronze.
Rio 2016 Olympians Steph Twell and Rob Mullett won the Women’s 5000m and Men’s 3000m Steeplechase respectively, with Adelle Tracey finishing as the runner up in the Women’s 800m. All three athletes have secured their place at London 2017 having already run the qualifying time for their respective event.
European Bronze Medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian Elliot Giles retained his British title in the Men’s 800m and will hope to run a London 2017 Qualification Time at the Anniversary Games on the 9th July to gain automatic selection. Rio 2016 Olympian Andy Vernon claimed the Silver medal in the Men’s 5000m, and Jake Wightman took the Bronze in the men’s 1500m. Andy sits in the automatic qualifying position if runs the 5000m qualifying time by the 24th June, whereas Jake who already has the qualifying time for the 1500m will wait until finial selection has taken place.
Six EPACC athletes and St Mary's alumni have already secured their selection for London 2017 with Sir Mo Farah set to defend his 5000m and 10000m titles, Beth Potter running in the Women’s 10,000m, and Paul Pollock and Charlotte Purdue running in the men’s and women’s marathons respectively. Alumna and Rio 2016 Olympian Jade Lally will also be competing in the Women's discus. Rio 2016 Silver Medalist Toby Gold meanwhile will be competing in the London 2017 Para World Championships in the T33 100m Wheelchair Racing
