St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU) has held an academic research festival for the Faculty of Sport, Technology, and Health Sciences (FSTHS) showcasing the breadth and depth of research within the Faculty.

The FSTHS Research Festival 2024 took place from 4th June to the 7th June, with Faculty academics and PhD Researchers delivering presentations and workshops on their research within the sport, technology, and health sciences fields.

The Festival included 40 research presentations from both academics and PhD students at SMU. These research presentations were split into seven different sessions:

  • Performance and Wellbeing in Sports
  • Advancing Practice in Health and Rehabilitation
  • Sport, Athlete Health, and Development
  • Nutrition and Diverse Populations
  • Health Promotion and Technology
  • Health, Education, and Rehabilitation
  • Innovative Approaches in Performance Enhancement.

These sessions highlighted the wide range of expertise and topical research within the Faculty, with presentations including studies on the effects of caffeine on heart rate, the link between AI and enhancing wellbeing, and the role of nutrition and the microbiome in ADHD. The full list of research topics can be found here.

Speaking on the Festival FSTHS Executive Dean Dr Leanne Griffiths said, “The Festival was, once again, such a great way of showcasing the exceptional research being conducted across the Faculty by our talented academic staff and postgraduate researchers. This was also the first year that workshops were incorporated into the schedule, focusing on the development of our researchers in key areas such as developing external collaborations and knowledge transfer projects, and dissemination of research in both peer-reviewed journals and through the media. Overall, it was a highly enjoyable and positive three days.”
