St Mary’s University, London’s Guardians of Creation Project has been featured on the Vatican’s Laudato Si Action Platform, which supports Catholic institutions and individuals in working towards ecological sustainability inspired by Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’.

The contribution by Dr Jakub Kowalewski, Senior Laudato Si’ Research Fellow at St Mary’s, explores lessons from the Guardian of Creation Project, and reflects on how faith communities can respond to the environment with hope, collaboration and intergenerational solidarity.

In Lessons from the Guardians of Creation Project, Dr Kowalewski shares insights from parish and school workshops on integral ecology across England, including

  • The power of small actions for long term change.
  • The importance of listening to young and older people.
  • The role of collaboration and networks.
  • Pope Francis’s call for intergenerational solidarity for environmental justice.

Through its research, partnerships and educational outreach, St Mary’s University continues to provide a leading role in the Church’s response to climate change and ecological degradation. The Guardians of Creation Project’s inclusion on the Vatican’s Laudato Si Action Platform underscores the international significance of its work.

About the Guardians of Creation Project

St Mary’s Guardians of Creation Project is an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research programme, which looks at multiple pathways to sustainable and ecological change in the Catholic Church.

The project provides guidance on how faith-based organisations can respond effectively to the ecological crisis. Through collaboration with dioceses, schools, and religious orders, the initiative supports the development of sustainability strategies rooted in Catholic social teaching.
