St Mary’s University, London, extends its sincere thanks to Cardinal Vincent Nichols following the announcement that Bishop Richard Moth has been appointed Archbishop of Westminster.

During his time as Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Nichols has been a strong advocate for Catholic education in England and Wales. The University has valued his support, which has helped to sustain St Mary’s mission and strengthen its connection to the wider Catholic community.

Cardinal Nichols has consistently emphasised education that forms the whole person – intellectually, ethically, and socially. This vision aligns closely with St Mary’s founding purpose and continues to shape its approach to teaching, research, and service.

Professor Anthony McClaran, Vice-Chancellor of St Mary’s University, said:

“Cardinal Nichols has shown a deep and enduring commitment to Catholic education, and St Mary’s has benefited greatly from his support and guidance over many years. His emphasis on education as a force for the common good resonates strongly with our mission and values.

As we welcome Bishop Richard Moth’s appointment as Archbishop of Westminster, we do so with gratitude for Cardinal Nichols’ leadership and with sincere thanks for the contribution he has made.”

As Cardinal Nichols steps aside from the role of Archbishop of Westminster, the St Mary’s community offers its thanks and best wishes for the future.
