St Mary’s University, London welcomed Prof Nicholas Hopton for his inaugural honorary professorial lecture, with a timely discussion examining the future of Iran and the wider Middle East.

In a lecture exploring the question “Iran – what next?”, Professor Hopton drew on his extensive diplomatic experience and deep understanding of the region to consider the political, social, and geopolitical challenges shaping Iran today. The lecture reflected on the country’s long and complex history while offering insights into the possible futures facing both Iran and the wider region.

Prof Hopton served as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 2016 to 2018, alongside a distinguished diplomatic career focused on the Middle East and international affairs.

The event marks the beginning of Professor Hopton’s continued engagement with St Mary’s through teaching, research, and public engagement activities connected to international relations and diplomacy.

Dr Christopher Wylde, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at St Mary's University said: “Prof Hopton’s experience at the highest levels of international diplomacy offers our students a unique opportunity to engage directly with contemporary global issues through the perspective of an experienced practitioner.”

Prof Hopton will contribute to teaching on the University’s MA Diplomacy and International Relations programme and support wider research activity through the School’s work on the Commonwealth of Nations. He will also strengthen the University’s outreach and engagement with political and diplomatic communities through his role as Chair of the Middle East Association.

The event reflects St Mary’s ongoing commitment to fostering informed discussion on major global issues and connecting students with leading practitioners in international affairs.
