Media and communication research

Communication is one of the key research areas at St Mary’s University, with 60% of our research judged to be ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’ in the last Research Excellence Framework.

Academics in the Marketing and Communication Subject Group have expertise in the full range of Communication disciplines, from political communications and marketing, to film and media industries, from digital and social media, to popular music and sports media. Some of our interests include the UK and European media systems, global and transnational platforms and media, media ethics and politics, subjectivity and digital culture, emerging technologies, visual culture, crime and gender, fandom, popular music culture and film philosophy.

We are open to PhD applications in all aspects of media and communication. We particularly encourage enquiries about projects in the following areas: narratives of exclusion and inclusion; digital culture and ethics: gender, victimhood and scapegoating; rhetorical/civic literacy and effective organizational communication; ethnicity, race and nation in popular media; and political cinemas.

We are involved in research collaborations with scholars nationally and internationally and have extensive experience supervising students from multiple cultural and research perspectives. As a PhD student with the Marketing and Communication Subject Group, you will also be part of the community of our postgraduate students in St Mary’s doctoral college. We can offer extensive experience in supporting your PhD studies as well as advising you on how to present your work in conferences or through publication.
