Research degrees
We have a thriving PhD programme with all students supported by a supervisory team of active researchers in the student’s subject area.
We have students studying for PhDs in areas as broad as:
- Sport, Exercise and Applied Sciences
- Allied Health and Life Sciences
- Business and Law
- Politics and Social Policy
- Social Sciences
- Education
- Theology
- Arts and Humanities.
We also offer Professional Doctorates in Business Administration, Education, Ministry, and Strength and Conditioning, and PhDs by Published Works in some disciplines.
We like to involve our PGR students fully in the life of the University, including our Research Centres, and offer a comprehensive Researcher Development Programme. A number of our students work in cross-disciplinary fields.
PhD, EdD and DMin programmes are also offered at our Edinburgh Campus at the Gillis Centre. Supervision through St Mary’s Edinburgh Campus will principally be online. Select in-person supervision may be arranged in Edinburgh as well as opportunities to visit the Twickenham campus.
Please see below for more information about our programmes.

Apply for a research degree
All potential PhD or MPhil students must first complete an online application form, which will include details of their proposal.
PhDs and MPhil programmes have two intakes each year in October and February.

"My doctoral experience at St Mary’s was excellent. I received a huge amount of support from my supervisors and the additional benefit of high quality academic conferences that I was able to attend and contribute to."
