Making the most out of Welcome Week if you’re not into partying

Fresher's Week, or Welcome Week as we know it at St Mary’s, is a week to get to know people at university through a variety of events. These can range from dancing at the Silent Disco to singing your heart out at Karaoke Night.

There is something for everyone to enjoy in the schedule of events!

When I first came to St Mary's, I was nervous. I didn't know the area well, or any of the students. I am a commuter, and as someone who isn't into the clubbing (partying) culture, I thought it might be difficult to fit in.

But this wasn't the case at all, as I was able to find my friends for life and meet so many people in the University.

Let’s talk about what’s on for Welcome Week

Throughout , there will be opportunities to meet the university staff teams. For instance, in this year's Fresher's Week, you can meet some of these teams at the Afternoon Tea sessions.

There are also sessions held by staff about Student Essentials, which are useful to help prepare you for when lectures start the week after, but also give you all the information needed to support you.

There are also events to engage with academics/students in your course. If you live in halls, there are events to make friends with people in the same accommodation as you.

How to make friends if you don’t want to go clubbing or partying during Welcome Week

The first win I had was going into my first and found some amazing friends through my course.

One of my favourite events from my first year at university was Fresher's Fayre. It happened on the Thursday of Welcome Week, and it was a really insightful event to attend. There were many employers promoting part-time work as well as St Mary's societies and clubs promoting themselves.

There is a for everyone at St Mary's. Whether it's the Irish Society, the Drama Society, or anything in between, everyone can find something they are interested in.

Another event which I would recommend attending is the Commuter Social events. As a commuter myself, these types of events are lovely to meet some students who also commute. These meet-ups can help you find people who may live locally to you and help branch out your circle of friends. You will also get to visit the Commuter Lounge, where the events are hosted. It is a unique part of our university!

My final tips for Welcome Week

  1. Take part in as many events as possible
  2. Sign up for different societies and events
  3. Get to know the University, especially if it’s your first time coming here
  4. Be yourself, as that is what being a Simmie is all about
