You belong at SMU

Messages from across our community reminding you that you matter.

Returning to campus after the Christmas break can feel like a lot. Timetables restart, money feels tighter, and it’s ok if things feel a bit more overwhelming than usual. We’re here to support you.

You Belong at SMU is a short wellbeing campaign sharing honest, reflective voice notes from staff across the University, responding to real questions and concerns from students.

Starting on Monday 19 January, we’ll be sharing these messages on our website and social channels.

What is You Belong at SMU?

A student sat and smiling in the Dolce Vita Cafe.

Each short clip features a member of staff offering reassurance, practical tips and perspective on a common student worry.

Staff will be sharing advice on the following themes:

  • Loneliness – finding your people and building real connections
  • Burnout and motivation – when even small tasks feel like too much
  • Balancing study, work and life – juggling deadlines, shifts and a social life
  • Money worries – saving and planning without missing out
  • Bereavement and family illness – coping when things are hard at home
  • Homesickness – feeling unsettled away from your usual routines
  • Navigating uni life – feeling behind or like everyone else “has it figured out”

You might not relate to every message, but we hope you’ll hear something that reminds you you’re not on your own.

If a message touches on something you’re going through, the most important thing is not to carry it alone. At St Mary’s there are several ways to ask for help or talk things through:
