Success for St Mary’s Athletes at BUCS Championships

Saturday 2nd February - Athletes from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, competed in the BUCS Cross Country Championships.

Athletes from the Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham had a successful weekend in competition at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Cross Country Championships which took place this Saturday 2nd February. There was an exceptional start to the day in Leeds after the St Mary’s team took top position in the men’s race with Daniel Davis, Stephen Scullion, Rowan Axe and Daniel Woodgate finishing in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 10th place respectively. There was also a strong performance from athletes in the women’s race, with the St Mary’s team finishing in 2nd position overall. Louise Small, who has been recovering from an injury, secured 6th place, closely followed by Leigh Lattimore who finished 7th and Emily Hosker-Thornhill who took 14th place. Meanwhile, St Mary’s athletes dominated the men’s B race with no less than eight athletes in the top ten. Defending champion Toby Loveridge secured Gold with a time of 27:32 whilst Jason Prickett ran his best race of the season and finished in 3rd place. These outstanding performances resulted in St Mary’s taking the top three positions in the team league table. It was also a successful weekend for St Mary’s EPACC Coach Mick Woods when Steve Connor and Emelia Gorecka, who both train with Mick at the University College, stormed their way to first place in the men’s and women’s races. St Mary’s has run an endurance programme since 2001, with London Marathon as the principle sponsor. EPACC was then formed in 2009 by Sport St Mary’s, again in partnership with the London Marathon, as an England Athletics Coach Development Centre. It provides a world-class endurance environment and several of Great Britain’s most talented distance runners work out of the centre, including Steph Twell, Andrew Osagie, Ross Murray, Charlotte Purdue, Andy Baddeley and Scott Overall.
