Last night (13th August) saw St Mary’s University, Twickenham Alumni Mo Farah and Andy Vernon secure two medals at the 2014 European Athletics Championships which is taking place from 12th to 17th August in Zurich.
The athletes, who both studied at St Mary’s took Gold and Silver in the Men’s 10,000m event (respectively) with Andy Vernon, who currently trains with St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC), securing a season best.
It adds to the medal table for the University after EPACC athlete Jo Pavey secured Gold in the Women’s 10,000m event on Tuesday 12th. Meanwhile, alumnus Harry Aikines-Aryeetey took Bronze in the Men’s 100m final.
St Mary’s Director for Sport Andrew Reid-Smith said, "It's great to our St Mary's EPACC athletes perform so well. Mo had a challenging lead in to this championship, but yet again proved what a class athlete he is taking his overall tally to five European gold medals.
“Andy Vernon's Silver is just reward for all his considerable efforts and ability. He has been a BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Cross Country champion, a Gold medallist at the World University Games and now has a track medal at a major championship, we are delighted for him."
