Genius and Rivalry, Legacy and Friendship, chaired by Programme Director for BA Theology and Religious Studies, Rev Dr Paul Rowan, will involve presentations and a discussion/debate led by Dale Ahlquist, President of the American Chesterton Society, and Peter S Williams, author of C S Lewis vs the New Atheists.
Chesterton and Lewis were both one-time atheists who became Christian apologists. Both were humble, grateful, humorous, intelligent, prophetic, robust, charitable, and beloved of many people (even their opponents). They wrote for a wide secular readership and debated and lectured in halls in the midst of the world’s enthrallment with modernity. The focus of the evening will be on the similarities and differences between these two best-selling authors, and the extent to which Lewis relied on Chesterton for his insights.
The springtime event is free and open to the public from 5.30pm in St Mary’s Waldegrave Drawing Room. For more information, please contact Rev Dr Paul Rowan on paul.rowan@stmarys.ac.uk or Siobhan Cockrill on siobhan.cockrill@stmarys.ac.uk.
