St Mary’s University, Twickenham students and alumni competed in the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Grand Prix athletics competition at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium on Sunday 24th August.
St Mary’s Alumnus Mo Farah continued his month of sporting success by earning 1st place in the Men’s 2 Mile event. Farah simultaneously gained a British record, Diamond League record and European Record for his race on Sunday where he finished with a time of 8:07.85. Andy Vernon was not far behind in the Men’s 2 Mile event and finished 6th overall.
Another former student Harry Aikines-Aryeetey narrowly missed a podium finish in the Men’s 100m sprint. Harry finished 6th place with only 0.26 seconds separating him from the winner.
Other notable results included St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) athlete Emelia Gorecka finishing 12th in the Women’s 2 Mile event. Furthermore current student Charlie Grice competed in the Men’s Emsley Carr Mile event and finished 14th.
The Grand Prix is part of the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League, and is organised and run by UK Athletics.
